چکیده

This special issue of the Journal Physical Organic Chemistry is dedicated to an outstanding physical organic chemist, mentor, and friend, Barry Carpenter, on occasion his official retirement. Knowing that great minds like never fully retire, we thought a fitting tribute would be compilation recent research by people who have been lucky enough crossed paths—trajectories—with him. Here, you will find selection contributions from Barry's science family. We hope diversity these encourage readers broaden their views reactivity delve deeper into its origins—as many contributions, in papers, talks, personal discussions, done. To Barry, say thank for having opened doors our minds, leading us beyond well-trodden minimum energy path new adventures chemistry. Memories to Stanisław Kielich: My teacher, my mentor and my friend

A consistent scheme is proposed for quantizing the potential amplitude in the Schrödinger equation in the caseof negative energies (lying in the discrete-spectrum domain). The properties of the eigenfunctionsφν(r) and eigenvalues ανcorresponding to zero, small, and large absolute values of energy E < 0 are analyzed. Expansion in the set {φν(r)} is used todevelop a regular pertur...

To our mentor and friend, professor Solé-Balcells.

Glossing the career of Dr. Francesc-Xavier Solé-Balcells is not easy, but I will try to do it from the point of view of the quality that he has always shown in any of his contributions in over 60 years of practice of urology. He started in urology as a resident of Professor Antonio Puigvert in Spain which was very different from Spain now. He quickly became known for his scientific rigor, his c...

Herman Jan Phaff, the father of yeast ecology, was born in the Netherlands in 1913. In his early years, he spent much time in his family's winery, which sparked his interest in microbes. Trained in the famous Delft tradition, Phaff discovered many unrecognized ecological niches of yeast, such as shellfish, rabbit stomach, frass of bark beetles, tree exudates, cactus roots, Capri figs, sewage, D...

Mel Avery: Mentor, Role Model, Friend, Mother of Us all

Dr. Mary Ellen Avery, affectionately known as “Mel,” was a woman of courage, with a sense of humor and deep humanity. She was an intellectual powerhouse, highly creative, and productive, similar to many leaders. Yet she became the most beloved mentor for many. Here, I share some personal memories hoping to inspire others juggling life and career responsibilities. I first met Mel in 1977 when sh...

Mentor Agent: An Intelligent Virtual Teacher for Personalized Learning Environments

A key issue in pedagogy is individualization, i.e., adapting the teaching to the needs of various learners. In many cases, however, current e-learning systems have so far focused most on porting existing courses with traditional teaching methods onto the web/virtual environments without any fine-tuning and adaptation to the learner needs, just making non-individualized teaching even more widely...
